When I was a teen, a *few* years ago,
in the country we lived with delight.
I loved Sears & Roebuck and ordered, thru mail,
the dresses so pretty and light.
With great expectation, I awaited each day,
as the mailman came into sight.
January 8th, I answered the door.
A "big bird" came to say,
"I have a package marked C.O.D.
Now will someone kindly pay?"
Ordering from catalogues was quite common, you see.
Why this bird, not a man, was a mystery to me!
I pondered this package,
'cause it wasn't wrapped right!
A ribbon of pink 'round a blanket of white?
After the ribbon was finally removed,
the blanket was then opened wide.
Mama smiled with delight as she let us all peek
at the new wiggly baby inside.
Yes, pretty she was, with her eyes of deep blue
and her hair had a reddish blonde tint.
But, I then cried aloud, "I ordered a dress.
" Were they out? Is *that* what they sent?"
Mama assured me, this order she'd made.
Filled to perfection, no doubt!
I questioned again, 'cause the blanket was wet.
"Had this bird hit a rainstorm en route?"

I learned to love her.
~Smile~
She turned out mighty pretty and sweet!
I am very thankful for this "Gift"!
